Trees
Can I look at the family tree in graphical
format? How?
General
What do the reference numbers mean?
The genealogical
conventions used on this website and in the family book are as
follows:
1. The numbering system is based on the "clock
picture". The children of Noah Abraham Felsenstein
appearing on the clock picture have been assigned the first digit,
according to their position on the clock, not their order of
seniority. Their children are represented in order of seniority by
the second digit, their grandchildren the third digit, and so
on. Except for the first digit, each digit represents age
order among their siblings. For example, Gabriel
Goldschmidt's Reference is 5.1.3 He is the third child of his
mother, Ketty Felsenstein Goldschmidt, who was the first child of
her father Isidor Felsenstein who was positioned at "5
o'clock" on the clock picture.
2. Every spouse of a
family member has a suffix "S" after the Reference Number.
3. The family tree
includes parents of spouses as well. Thus, the father-in-law
of a family member would have that family member's reference number
with the suffix "FIL". The mother-in-law would be
"MIL".
4. A divorced spouse
has the suffix "SD".

Can I use the site without logging on?
Yes, you can.
However, without logging on, you are limited. You can only search for a single person in the Find
page. You cannot move from person to person. So you can't link to a
member's spouse or children directly.
You also cannot see
the graphs and trees.
What are the advantages of logging on?
Your use of the
website is
much more flexible when you log on. When you click on an
underlined name within somebody's record, you are taken to that
person's record. If you have not logged on, this is not
possible. You can also make modifications to your own
information as well as that of any of your descendants.
How do I log on?
Click
on the "Login" icon on the navigation bar on the left-hand
side of the page. You will be asked for your reference number
and your password.
Your
reference
number is your personal reference number and your password is
assigned to you by the web site manager. When you have entered
both your reference number and your password, you then click on the
"Login" button on the screen. You will note
that what will appear on the screen is your own personal data
in the family tree database.
What
is the reason that a "Login" procedure was made part of
the web site?
A lot of effort has gone into creating the
Felsenstein family tree database. The full benefits of the
web site, including the ability to make data changes, are therefore limited exclusively to family members who have purchased the Felsenstein Family
Chronicle. In addition, the use of a login procedure will help to
protect the integrity of our database.
How do I become a member and get my
password?
Click on the Contact
page for instructions.
Can
I change my password?
At
the moment we have not included the facility to change passwords,
but we may introduce this at a later date.
How
do I log out?
Click
on the "Logout" button on the navigation bar on the
left-hand side of the Home page.

Browse
What is browsing?
Browsing means having a look around the
website, and it also means searching for interesting data and
materials. In browsing, generally , the more creative you are,
the more information you will obtain. So, the more experienced you
become the more useful the web site will be for you.
How do I browse the family tree?
Click on "Browse" on the navigation
bar on the left-hand side of the web page. You will be taken
to a "Find People" screen. This enables you to
search for people using different criteria.
How do I search for specific people?
Once
you are on the "Find People" screen (see above
question), you can search for family members by name (either first
name or last name, but not both), or by reference number, or by
address (country, or city). You can also enter part
of a name or a reference number. For example, if you put in
the word "Gold", in the "Name" field, the
database search will list results will list all members of the
Goldschmidt, Goldberg, Goldblatt and Goldstein families as well as
ladies by the name of Golda.
If you would like to find all the
descendents of one person, you would enter their reference number in
the "RefNum" field. When you then click on the
"Find" button, every family member with that sequence of numbers at
the beginning of their reference number will be listed. These
are all the descendents of that particular person. For
example, if you enter 5.3.2, every descendant of family member 5.3.2
will be listed.
The
lists that result from these
searches may be several lines or several pages
long. The buttons at the bottom of the page allow you to go
forward or backward in the list. ">" takes you forward to the
next page. "<" takes you backward. ">|" takes you to
the last page of the list. " |<" takes you to the first page
of the list.
When
you have found the person you are seeking, click on their
name. You will then be taken to their page on the family tree
database, which will list that person's spouse, parents and
children, with all their relevant data. When you have finished, click on the
"Back" button at the top of the page of your browser
to take you back to the list or click on one of the navigation
buttons on the left-hand side of the page to take you somewhere
else.
Why
are some names underlined and some not?
The
names which are underlined are the ones that, if clicked upon with
the mouse, will take you to a screen with further information on
that person.

Data Changes
When would I use the "Changes" page?
When
any of the information in our database relevant to you and /or
to members of your family has changed, it is most important
that you use the Changes page. The purpose of making these
changes is to keep the Felsenstein family database continuously
updated to the latest information. The data Changes include
change of address, telephone, fax or E-mail; birth of a new child; a
new marriage, or a divorce; and also the death of a family member.
How do I make changes to family data?
First make sure you have logged
on to the site. If you do not have a logon password,
please send your changes to the website
managers (see Contact
page). Find the data page of the person whose information you
would like to change (see answer to Question "How
do I search for specific people?"). Then click on the
"Changes" button on the left-hand side of the page.
Move your mouse to the appropriate field (you may need to scroll
down the page) and add or change the information. If you make a mistake,
click on "Reset". Once you have entered the
information, click on the "Submit" button. A page
confirming your changes will appear. To get back to the main
website, click on the "Back" button on your browser.
Do I have to fill out the entire data form
again when making changes?
No. You only have to fill out the section
which is changing. For example, if your telephone number
has changed, simply enter your new telephone number in the relevant
section.
Will the changes I submit automatically be
changed in the database?
At
the present time, all changes must be submitted by E-mail to the
Website managers. When you have completed your changes in any part
of the changes page, click on the Submit button. This will
automatically send your change by E-mail to the website
managers.
In the future we expect that if you have your own password, changes that you make to any data for yourself,
your immediate family or to
any of your descendents and their immediate families will
automatically update the database. But if you wish to make
changes to data for other family members (for example, that of a sibling
or a cousin), when
you submit the data change(s) it will be up to the web site managers
to decide whether to
accept it . The reason for this limitation is to make certain that
no one can change someone else's data, and thus potentially destroy
valuable information in the family tree. If you do not have your own
password but would like to make data changes, please contact the website
managers (see Contact
page).

Newsletter
What is the newsletter?
The
Felsenstein family newsletter will be a collection of interesting articles and
features on this website about the Felsenstein family. It has
not been launched yet. We are looking for one or several
family members to volunteer as editor(s) and writers!
How do I submit an article or information to
the newsletter?
Besides an editor,
we need contributors. For the moment, please send all material
to the website
managers (see Contact
page).
What type of articles would be relevant for
the newsletter?
Anything relevant
to the Felsenstein family or to genealogy in general. We
reserve the right to edit or reject any material which we feel is
inappropriate.
When will the newsletter appear?
We will not make
this decision until we find an editor.
Who do I contact if I would like to volunteer
to be the newsletter editor?
Please contact the website
managers (see Contact
page).

Messageboard
What is the messageboard?
The messageboard is
an area on the website where you can post messages for the
Felsenstein family or for a particular family member. For example, if
you are looking for a photo of a particular member of the family,
then you could post a message on the messageboard.
Can I post a message on the site? How?
You
can only post a message if you have a logon password.
Once you have logged on, click on the
"Messages" button on the left-hand side of the page. You
will then be taken
to the family message board. To post a message, click on
"Post a Message". A message screen will
appear. Click your mouse on the "Subject" line (the
top line). Start typing the subject name. Then move your
mouse to the main body of the message and start typing. When
you have completed the message, click on "Send". You
will be taken to the main message page, where your message will
appear at the bottom.
